Trust your gut again

Most approaches manage IBS symptoms. This works at the level that’s actually producing them, so relief doesn’t depend on a permanent list of foods you can’t eat.

Sound familiar?

You’ve already done the sensible things

Cut the foods. Tracked the triggers. Read most of the gut health books going. And somewhere underneath it, part of you is still bracing for the next flare.

Scanning every menu

Before you’ve even sat down, you’ve worked out what’s safe and what’s a risk.

Planning around access

The seat near the door. The route with a toilet halfway. Spontaneity stopped being simple a while back.

A shrinking list of safe foods

Gluten, dairy, FODMAPs — one by one, the list of things you can eat without thinking gets shorter.

Good days that don’t feel safe

Even when nothing’s wrong, part of you is still braced for it to go wrong.

Tried what’s supposed to work

Low FODMAP, probiotics, peppermint oil. Some of it helped a little. None of it held.

Told it’s stress, then told to relax

Which is a bit like being told not to think about a white bear.

Who this is for

Is this you?

You don’t need to tick every box. If most of this sounds familiar, it’s worth a conversation.

  • Symptoms for 18 months or more, without a real improvement
  • Anxious about travel, meetings or plans because of your gut
  • Tried diet changes, supplements or medication — relief never quite lasts
  • A shrinking list of foods that feel “safe”
  • Told your tests are normal — which somehow makes it worse
  • High-achieving, driven, and used to solving problems yourself
The real reason

Your gut isn’t broken. It’s hypersensitive.

You’ve probably already wondered if stress has something to do with it. You’re right — somewhere along the way, your brain learned that digestion is dangerous. Not because anything’s actually wrong, but because after enough bad episodes, it started sounding the alarm on an ordinary meal the same way it would a real threat.

Diet addresses triggers. Medication suppresses reactions. Neither one touches the false alarm itself, which is why the relief so often doesn’t last.

In my own case, I could give you a list of reasons not to eat almost anything in my kitchen — gluten, nightshades, high FODMAP, oxalates. Some of that helped, for a while. But food had become the enemy, and my brain was treating ordinary meals as something to defend against.

What actually changes things

Long-term relief comes from retraining that connection, not from managing what’s on your plate. Brains can relearn — that’s neuroplasticity in practice — and once yours stops treating digestion as dangerous, the sensitivity eases and the list of foods you can eat without thinking starts to grow back.

The approach

The Western Protocol

A three-part framework built from gut-brain retraining, nervous system regulation, and my own recovery from IBS.

01

Calm the signal

Reduce gut hypersensitivity by teaching your nervous system, at the level where it actually listens, that digestion isn’t a threat.

02

Retrain the response

Break the unconscious link between certain foods, situations or feelings and danger — the link that’s driving the reaction before you’ve had a chance to think.

03

Rebuild trust

Regulate the nervous system’s baseline so calm becomes the default state your gut returns to, not a rare good day.

About Phil

Philip Western

I recovered from my own IBS after years of being bounced between the medical system and alternative medicine, trying everything, and finding nothing that addressed what was actually driving it.

I trained specifically in gut-brain retraining methods so I could help people do that without the years I spent figuring it out the hard way.

What changes

What’s possible after the programme

  • Eat out without scanning the menu for what’s safe first
  • Travel without mapping every bathroom along the way
  • Say yes to plans without running the “what if” first
  • Sit through a meeting without tracking the nearest exit
  • Watch your list of “safe foods” grow back instead of shrink
  • Trust a good day enough to actually make plans around it
From clients

In their own words

“Came to Phil skeptical there’d be any real change. All these weeks later, what a difference. I noticed something from the first session. I had a mild setback getting sick, and was able to power through it in 24-48 hours — something that would’ve taken weeks before.”

EmilyIBS programme client

“I am a sceptic and approached the process with hesitation. The results have been powerful and impressive — he’s able to help you access a very deep place. Highly recommend.”

Rich LangUSA

“Remarkably effective. Phil helped me uncover issues I didn’t even realise I was avoiding. Subtle yet powerful — more like a revealing conversation than traditional hypnotherapy.”
